About

Every painting, meticulously executed and teeming with adolescent attraction, is derived from Whipple’s and the subjects shared experiences. The lustrous youths portrayed are celebrated, although obscured, in Whipple’s decadent and ravishing interpretation. Whipple portrays the essence of innocence made clear only in retrospect. The work simultaneously explores the origins of youth and the light within the soul. Through viewing these works, the artist is rekindling the values of hope and purity while illustrating an acute awareness of a blossoming identity.

Whipple’s paintings transform everyday life into a magnificent atmospheric daydream. The subjects bear an assumptive apathy and vulnerability within the coming of age narrative. The purpose of the work is to transmit a sacred atmosphere of unconditional love to the viewer. These paintings act as a mirror to the viewer, displaying the self-perception on a subconscious scale by disrupting the internal dialogue. Whipple’s work challenges the viewer to consider the impact of light, divinity, and the collective consciousness to draw conclusions on their own beliefs.

Philosophy

Whipple’s work explores the tension of reality by confronting the duality of the material in relation to the essence of the soul and the world around it. The intention of the work is to create a space in which the viewer can dwell on the lightness of being and find peace in their reality. The mission of the work is to bring light and harmony to the world.

Technique

Whipple’s procedures and stylistic devices underscore the core image. The artist appropriates photographs through grid transfer by rescaling the image on canvas by hand. She uses the process as a meaningful and deliberate way to transfer visual information with astonishing consistency in the body of work, both with subject and intention. Committing the image to canvas involves a willed act of recognition.

The minuscule proportion of the grid in relation to the enormity of the canvas maximizes the work’s textural density. As a result, the image attains distinctly photographic elegance when seen from afar. Seen up close however, the viewer is dissolved into assessing thousands of tiny nonfigurative elements organized according to a fleeting though self-sufficient logic. Through this balance, recalling the melding duality of reality and perception, the artist confidently calls on the viewer to fully employ his or her faculties as a participant while never losing sight of the fact that the lens has intervened in the process.

Whipple works from photographic references to curate a delicate narrative, often mixing photos of friends with sunsets and seascapes from her travels. The majority of the subjects are a mix of super models and fashion industry types surrounded by lush tropical landscapes (reminiscent of Whipple’s upbringing in Kauai).
